thx for the numerous responses from the previous couple of threads....for me it is a toss up between 3 Doors Down and Cage The Elephant. Whats YOUR current favorite non-dead or non-dead related band!

Guess it's not a band, but I've been lately obsessing over David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name. An apt title if there ever was one. Some of the most beautiful melodies and singing ever.

Favorite? Never could say I had only one. Right now though I've got a few in regular rotation. Always have Metheny in their somewhere. Coltrane and Miles usually sneak in from time to time. Stevie Ray is rarely too far away. And to give myself a jolt in the AM on the way to work, I've been listening to Queensryche and a little Tool (save the jokes on that one, too easy).

I've been listening to GD pretty solid this month, but finding time to work in some Magma (incredible French prog, witness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a73XLkf43-s) and my wife and I recently discovered Mulatu Astatke (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=safPXb8wc8A).

magma! those guys go deep. they had their own language and everything! great drummer.

and if you like mulatu you may want to explore the ethiopiques series. it goes in some different directions, but there is a lot of really great music there.

Well, I've gone on and on about the new wave here (thank you for not kicking me out), but I've also been listening to the Shins and Danger Mouse & James Mercer's Broken Bells - great stuff. And someone gave me a copy of The Grey Album, which is Danger Mouse's mash-up of the a capella version of Jay-Z's hardcore rap Black Album and the Beatles White Album. It's ... interesting, but not as interesting as it might sound.

I love bluegrass and old-time music, and just discovered Carolina Chocolate Drops. Neat stuff. Old-time African-American music, with fiddles, banjos and raw hot rhythm. Maybe I can still take fiddle lessons …

Live from a festival:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XBw3KRFlSk

What I’ve loaded or brought on CD here to The Other Side of the World (not counting GD and that vein) tends to be heavy on time-tested favorites, like Loreena McKennitt and old Au Pairs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXtrqHrHcI8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMtWo-Kn0Xg

And then, not everything worth hearing is from the last hundred years:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mX7ugJ5NM8

Pay no attention to the translation. He is actually singing of the horrors of gangsta rap and today’s vapid pop music. I think a reference to Lady Gaga may be in there, for those who love to hate her …

So do I qualify as musically schizo or what?

Always like seeing the suggestions here, Deadish and otherwise – it’s such a musically diverse (and impressively knowledgeable) group. It's interesting to see what else folks listen to … beyond the question of To Brent or Not To Brent.

My girlfriend recently turned me on to Flight of the Conchords, good & funny stuff.

ouch. your question made me realize that I've been in a HUGE rut listening to the dead almost all of the time -- when I'm home I've got something from the archive going and on the road, satellite radio has made me a very happy driver, but my kids......

Try headphones. That's my Sneaky Mommy Tip of the Day. If they don't hear it all the time, they might actually like it. Says the mom who can now brag that her kid actually comes into the room when he hears Dark Star, and even LOOKS for Dark Stars online. (Of course, this will probably jinx it.)

Edit: But, um, not on the road ...

Good idea on the headphones, though the kids are coming around. Each now has his favorite dead song and they even make dead-lyric related jokes -- like the other day when we had to go to the drugstore to get allergy medicine -- as we pull into the parking lot my 12-year old sang out "Claritin Station!" and we all just about died laughing.

I've been streaming a lot of New Monsoon and Bobby Lee Rodgers lately. (I know it's more than one band, but jglynn had more than one so I can too....)

Also Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper - that guy can flat out destroy a fiddle. How can you not like a bluegrass band where every single member has won the IBMA Banjo/mandolin/fiddle/guitar/bass Player of the Year at least once?

I just picked up my tickets for the Cheese's Hulaween at Hampton Coliseum the end of October. The Biscuits are opening both nights and the Cheese are doing a three set show the second night.

Right now I am in a heavy Rolling Stones phase. I have been listening to Let It Bleed about once a day. Also Beggars Banquet.
